<p>It’s important not to gain too little or too much weight during pregnancy. Gaining too little weight can put you at risk of giving birth to a low-birth weight baby (that is, a baby who is 5.5 pounds or less at birth), who may experience developmental delays, and increases your chances of experiencing still birth or neonatal death. And gaining too much weight during pregnancy increases your chances of experiencing back strain, high blood pressure and preeclampsia, gestational diabetes, macrosomia (an excessively large baby), weight problems after your baby is born, of requiring a cesarean section, and of experiencing the death of a baby through stillbirth or neonatal death.<span id="more-1873"></span></p>

<li>During the second and third trimesters (the last 6 months): between 1/2 and 1 pound each week.</li>
<li>If you gained too much weight early in the pregnancy: limit weight gain to 3/4 of a pound each week (3 pounds each month).</li>

<p>A weight gain of 2 pounds or more each week is considered high. Keep in mind that your weekly rate of weight gain may go up and down throughout the course of your pregnancy. Some weeks you may gain weight, other weeks you won’t; as a result, your weekly rate of gain may not match your overall weight gain goal exactly. Your doctor will let you know if you’re gaining too much or too little weight for a healthy pregnancy. Weight loss can be dangerous during any part of your pregnancy. Report any weight loss to your doctor right away.</p>

<p>The American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists recommends that mothers who are carrying twins gain 35 to 45 pounds during their pregnancies. Some experts in twin pregnancies recommend a slightly higher weight gain, something in the 40- to 50-pound range.</p>
<p>You’ll need to gain even more than this if you’re carrying triplets or other higher-order multiples. A weight gain of 50 to 60 pounds when you’re carrying triplets and 65 to 80 pounds when you’re carrying quadruplets is not at all unusual. But more important than the actual number of the scale is the amount of nutrient-rich food you’re consuming. When you’re carrying that many babies, you need to ensure sure that every bite counts.</p>

<p>Regardless of your actual weight gain target, you should aim for slow, gradual weight gain during pregnancy. Although you may not gain any weight during the first trimester (and, in fact, you may actually lose a few pounds if you’re having particular difficulty with morning sickness), you should aim to gain one pound a week during your second and third trimesters — slightly less if you’re overweight, and slightly more if you’re underweight. You may not gain any weight during the last four weeks of pregnancy.</p>
<p>In fact, you may even lose a pound or two. This means that you can expect to gain approximately 25 percent of your weight between weeks 12 and 20, another 50 percent between weeks 20 and 30, and the remaining 25 percent between weeks 30 and 36. By the time you deliver, you will have consumed an extra 80,000 calories  the amount of energy it takes to “grow” a baby.</p>
<p>Your doctor will let you know if you’re gaining too much or too little weight for a healthy pregnancy. Weight loss can be dangerous during any part of your pregnancy. Report any weight loss to your health care provider right away.</p>

But ask anyone who’s had morning sickness, and she’ll   tell you: It can hit any time it wants. It often starts during the fifth or   sixth week (that is, three to four weeks after you miss your period ) and   goes away, or at least becomes much less severe, by the end of the 11th or   12th week. It can last longer, though, particularly in women who are   expecting twins or more.</p>
<p>If you’re experiencing nausea, we sympathize. Even when   nausea doesn’t actually cause you to vomit, it can be extremely uncomfortable   and truly debilitating.. If your queasiness gets out of control — if you   experience weight loss, if you find that you can’t keep down food or liquids,   or if you feel dizzy or faint — call your doctor. If you’re really bothered   by the nausea, talk to your doctor about over-the counter or prescription   medications. Your doctor may suggest or prescribe :</p>
<ul>
<li><span style="text-decoration: underline;">Vitamin B6</span><strong>: </strong>Some evidence   suggests that 50 milligrams of vitamin B6 three times a day can reduce   nausea.  Take time to talk to your   doctor about trying vitamin B6.</li>
<li><span style="text-decoration: underline;">Ondansetron (Zofran</span><strong>): </strong>Some women find   relief for extreme nausea with or without vomiting from this prescription   medication. Although ondansetron hasn’t been extensively studied in   pregnancy, we know of no reports of an increase in birth defects associated   with this medication.</li>
<li><span style="text-decoration: underline;">Metoclopramide (Reglan)</span>:<strong> </strong>Your doctor can actually administer this drug by   continuous infusion under the skin through a device known as a subcutaneous   pump. The advantage of this method is that for those women who really can’t   even swallow a pill because they’re so nauseous, they don’t have to.</li>
</ul>
<p>Occasionally, the nausea and vomiting are so severe that   you develop a condition called <em>hyperemesis   gravidarum. </em>The symptoms include dehydration and   weight loss. If you develop hyperemesis gravidarum, you may need to be given   fluids and medications intravenously. If you’re less than six weeks pregnant,   you can take folic acid alone instead of your prenatal vitamin. Folic acid is   the main supplement that you need early in your pregnancy, and it’s much less   likely to upset your stomach than the multivitamin you normally take during   pregnancy. Check with your doctor for the correct dose for you.</p>
<p>You may hear some women say that morning sickness is a   sign that you’re experiencing a “normal” pregnancy, but that claim is a myth   — and so is the reverse. If you’re not having morning sickness, or if it   suddenly disappears, don’t worry that your pregnancy isn’t normal; just enjoy   your good fortune. Similarly, you may hear that the severity of your   queasiness indicates whether you’re having a girl or a boy. But that’s also a   myth, so don’t buy those pink or blue outfits just yet, Above all, don’t   compound the problem by worrying about it.</p>
<p>The nausea is harmless — to you and the baby. Your optimal   weight gain for the first three months is only 2 pounds. Even losing weight   probably isn’t a big problem. This is   the most talked about discomfort of early pregnancy. It is actually a misnomer since it can   occur at any   time of the day. Many women describe it as feeling like the beginnings of a stomach flu. You   feel nauseous—as if you’re going to throw up. You may also be actually vomiting at   times. Some   researchers believe this symptom of early pregnancy is researchers believe it’s caused by   the way your body breaks down and utilizes carbohydrates. You can’t really do anything   about the   hormones—they’re needed to maintain the pregnancy. But you can provide your body with a   more constant supply of carbohydrates. Many women with morning sickness experience it upon   waking perhaps   because their bodies have been without carbohydrates during an 8 to 10 hour period of   sleep. The answer to the problem, whenever it occurs, may be to give the body   more carbohydrates. Unfortunately,   the last thing you’ll want to do when you feel like this is to eat</p>

<p><strong>Tips</strong> for dealing with morning sickness :</p>
<ul>
<li>Make sure you get   something light to eat just before bedtime.</li>
<li>Throughout the day,   try to notice when you have the most intense symptoms of “morning sickness,”   then, in the following days, try to eat something prior to this time period   even if you’re not hungry. Remind yourself that there may be unpleasant   consequences if you don’t follow the schedule.</li>
<li>Try eating six   small meals a day instead of the usual three, or include nutritious snacks in   your daily eating.</li>
<li>Avoid fried or   greasy foods. They may exacerbate morning sickness and they aren’t good for a   pregnancy diet anyway. Spicy food may also not be tolerated well in early   pregnancy.</li>
<li> Always carry some   crackers, protein bars, or dry cereal with you. You should keep snacks in the   car, at work, and in your purse. When you start to feel queasy, eat these   carbohydrates slowly and try to get some fresh air.</li>
<li>If you feel   nauseous, put a cold cloth on your face and take slow, deep breaths to calm   yourself. Realize that the anxiety of knowing you may be getting “sick to   your stomach” may make the problem worse.</li>
<li>Some women learn   how to use acupressure. This Chinese method of applying pressure to various   points in the body may be helpful in alleviating your pregnancy nausea.</li>

<p>There are also mechanical issues involved. As your center of   gravity moves forward, you’ll lean backwards to compensate from flailing   forward. Naturally, this creates an increased amount of strain on the back   muscles.</p>
<p>In addition, there are hormonal changes, specifically a   hormone called <em>relaxin</em>, which is produced by the body and helps to loosen the   ligaments and attachments in the pelvic region in order to accommodate the   baby. All of these things, plus poor posture and possibly poor physical   conditioning, can increase a person’s risk for back pain. The basic   physiological change that is occurring is an inflammatory response to the strain-induced   muscle and back injury.</p>

Your breasts may feel full and heavy, and they might be   tender or uncomfortable. The nipples and  <em>areolae </em>(the circular areas around the   nipples) also grow bigger and may begin to darken. Breast changes are caused   by the large amounts of estrogen and progesterone your body produces during   pregnancy. These hormones cause the glands inside your breasts to grow and   branch out for milk production and breastfeeding after the baby is born.   Blood supply to the breasts also increases markedly. You may notice large,   bluish blood vessels coursing along your breasts.</p>
<p>Breast discomfort is pretty common among pregnant women as the breast stretches and enlarges in order to accommodate future lactation. In fact, some women will suspect they are pregnant because their breasts hurt. Other women experience more discomfort closer to delivery. For many women, the pain varies from the beginning of the pregnancy   until the end.</p>
<p>In the   third trimester, some pregnant women begin to leak colostrums from their   breasts. Colostrum is the first milk that your breasts produce for the baby.   It is a thick, yellowish fluid containing antibodies that protect newborns from   infection. If leaking becomes embarrassing, put nursing pads inside your bra.</p>

<li>You can’t do much about your need to urinate frequently,   except use common sense. Before going out for long (or even short) trips,   empty your bladder so that you don’t find yourself needing facilities when   none are available.</li>
<li>Drink plenty of fluids during pregnancy to avoid   dehydration, but try to drink more during the day and less in the evening so   that you aren’t up all night going to the restroom. Coffee and tea contain   caffeine (a <em>diuretic, </em>which increases the flow of urine) and may aggravate the   situation, so try decreasing the amount of caffeine you consume. </li>
<li>If you find yourself urinating even more than your   pregnancy norm or if you feel any discomfort or burning or notice blood   during urination, talk to your practitioner. When you’re pregnant, bacteria   in your urine are more likely than usual to cause a urinary tract infection.</li>

<p>Rest assured that your exhaustion will probably go away   somewhere around the 12th to 14<sup>th</sup> week of your pregnancy. As your   fatigue lessens, you’ll probably feel more energetic and almost normal, until   about 30 to 34 weeks into your pregnancy, when you may tire out again. In the   meantime, remember that fatigue is nature’s way of telling you to get more   rest. If you can, try to catch a short nap during the day and go to bed   earlier than usual at night.</p>

The body <em>thinks </em>it is anemic   because of this dilutional effect, and the result is that the woman does   actually feel tired. Because of this relative anemia, most doctor give   pregnant women prenatal vitamin supplements that contain the necessary iron   that she might lack. However, rarely will a woman require more iron than can   be found in the normal prenatal vitamin. Her anemic status will be checked   again in the third trimester, and additional iron supplements may be added at   that time as needed.</p>

<p>Every   expectant mother should have a complete oral exam prior to or very early in   pregnancy. All needed dental work should be managed early, because having urgent   treatment during pregnancy can present risks. Interventions can be started to   control risks for gum inflammation and disease. This also is the best time to   change habits that may affect the health of teeth and gums, and the health of   the baby.</p>

<p><span style="text-decoration: underline;">Constipation</span></p>
<p>Many   pregnant women complain of constipation. High levels of hormones in your pregnant   body slow down digestion and relax muscles in the bowels leaving many women   constipated. Plus, the pressure of the expanding uterus on the bowels boosts   the chances for constipation. What this means is that   the intestines are not pushing the fecal matter through the bowel as   efficiently as before the pregnancy. Therefore, the stools become drier as   the water in them is reabsorbed by the intestines, which leads to firmer and   drier stools, and the unpleasant feeling associated with constipation</p>
<p><strong>Tips </strong>to stay more regular :</p>
<ul>
<li><strong>Eat plenty of high-fiber foods. </strong>Bran cereals, fruits, and vegetables all are good sources   of fiber. Some women find it helpful to eat some popcorn, but choose the   low-fat kind, without all the butter and added oil. Check the fiber content   on package labels and choose foods with higher fiber content.</li>
<li><strong>Drink plenty of water. </strong>Drink eight to 10 glasses of   water everyday. Staying well hydrated helps keep   food and waste moving through the digestive tract. Some juices (especially   prune juice) may help, while others (such as apple juice) may only exacerbate   the problem.</li>
<li><strong>Take stool softeners. </strong>A   stool softener, such as Colace (docusate sodium), isn’t a laxative — it just   keeps the stool soft. Stool softeners are safe during pregnancy, and you may   take them two to three times a day. Avoid laxatives because they can cause   abdominal cramping and, occasionally, uterine contractions. For any person,   pregnant or not, chronic laxative use should be avoided. If you’re extremely   constipated, though, and aren’t at risk for preterm labor, you may want to   talk to your practitioner about the short-term use of a very mild laxative,   like a glycerin suppository or milk of magnesia.</li>
<li><strong>Exercise as regularly as you can. </strong>Exercise helps constipation, so enjoy some safe exercise   (even if it’s only walking).</li>

The   food and acid causes the burning feeling of heartburn. As your baby gets   bigger, the uterus pushes on the stomach making heartburn more common in   later pregnancy. <p>Worried   about the dreaded stretch marks of pregnancy? Just about all pregnant women   are. The good news is that only about half of pregnant women get stretch   marks. Stretch marks are red, pink, or purple streaks in the skin. Most often   they appear on the thighs, buttocks, abdomen, and breasts. These scars are   caused by the stretching of the skin, and usually appear in the second half   of pregnancy.</p>
<p>The color   of stretch marks depends on a woman’s skin color. They can be pink, reddish   brown, or dark brown streaks. While creams and lotions can keep your skin   well moisturized, they do not prevent stretch marks from forming. Most stretch   marks fade after delivery to very light lines.</p>

He or she will want to see you to be sure you’re not having an <em>ectopic</em> <em>pregnancy.</em> With   ectopic pregnancy, a fertilized egg does not descend into the uterus for   implantation. Instead it remains in the fallopian tube and starts to develop   there. If the embryo is allowed to remain there, it will rupture the   fallopian tube. Once this problem is diagnosed, the treatment is usually   successful. If you’re diagnosed with an ectopic pregnancy, for the sake of   your health, your pregnancy cannot be allowed to continue. Prompt action on   the part of your OB provider will ensure that you’re able to try and become   pregnant again as soon as you desire.</p>

Leg cramping can also interfere with a good night’s sleep.</p>
<p>By the third trimester, your large belly will make it   impossible to sleep on your front, and sleeping on your back is not   recommended since this position may restrict blood flow to your uterus.</p>

<li>Avoid   eating large meals 3 hours before going to bed.</li>
<li>Get some   mild exercise like walking.</li>
<li>Avoid   long naps during the day.</li>

Women who are underweight before   pregnancy should gain 28 to 40 pounds. And women who are overweight should gain   15 to 25 pounds.</p>
<p>Research   shows that women who gain more than the recommended amount during pregnancy   have a higher chance of being obese 10 years later. Ask your doctor how much   weight gain during pregnancy is healthy for you. Some weight gain, particularly around the waist, is normal.   However, if you’re   gaining an inordinate amount of weight in the first trimester,   consult with your doctor.</p>
<p>First, make sure you are not pregnant with multiple gestations   (i.e., twins). Next, try to rule out any physiological reason for the weight   gain, such as any pre-existing medical condition or hormonal disorder   (possibly thyroid disease, diabetes, or Cushing’s disease or syndrome). Make   sure you’re eating a healthful diet with the requisite amounts of fruits, vegetables,   proteins, and complex carbohydrates. Try to cut out excess sugar and   calories, such as fried foods and fast foods. The first trimester is not the   time to gain weight. An ideal weight gain for this period would likely be   based on your body mass index (BMI), which can be calculated using your pre   pregnancy height and weight<strong><em> </em></strong></p>

<li>Your partner is angry because the pregnancy was unplanned.</li>
<li>Your partner feels anxious and angry because the baby you are having has come too soon after the last baby.</li>
<li>Your partner feels jealous of the baby.</li>
</ul>
<p>Remember: There is no excuse for abuse!</p>

<p><strong>Results of Abuse</strong></p>
<p>Abuse affects your mind and body. Here are some of the effects it can have:</p>
<ul>
<li>You may have anemia (too few red blood cells), because you are not eating right or getting enough vitamins and iron.</li>
<li>You may have bleeding during the first and second trimesters.</li>
<li>You may not gain enough weight during the pregnancy.</li>
<li>You may have more infections.</li>
<li>Your baby may be too small at birth or may be born too early.</li>
<li>Your baby may have problems after birth.</li>
<li>You may feel depressed (sad and blue).</li>
<li>You may feel anxious, upset, lonely, and worthless.</li>
<li>You may not like yourself.</li>
<li>You may be at risk for unhealthy behaviors, such as smoking or abusing drugs and alcohol during the pregnancy.</li>
<li>You may not receive important regular prenatal care.</li>
</ul>

<p><strong>Are You Being Abused?</strong></p>
<p>Many women don’t want to accept the reality that they are being abused. Many just don’t realize that their partner’s actions are abusive. Here’s how to know if you’re being abused:</p>

<ul>

<li>keep track of all your time, where you go, and your relationships with others?</li>

<li>seem to be more violent as time goes on?</li>
</ul>
<p>If you answered “yes” to three or more of these questions, you are probably being abused. You may be at high risk for being hurt or even killed by your partner.</p>

<p><strong>Planning for Your Safety</strong></p>
<p>Here are ways to plan for your safety so you can act quickly if you need to get away:</p>
<ul>
<li>Think of a safe place you and your children can go. Talk to someone you trust about your plans.</li>
<li>Practice how to get out of your home safely through doors, windows, stairwells, elevators, and fire escapes.</li>
<li>Remove all weapons from the home, if you can do this safely.</li>
<li>Learn the phone numbers for the local police and women’s shelter.</li>
<li>Keep an extra set of car keys or money for a bus or cab in a safe place. Make sure you can get to them quickly.</li>
<li>If you are planning to leave permanently, it will help if you have money, keys, extra clothing, and important papers ready to take with you.</li>
</ul>

<p>At the time of a violent argument:</p>
<ul>
<li>Avoid a room with only one exit.</li>
<li>If you are in danger, scream so that your neighbors can hear you.</li>
<li>If you must leave the children in the home, call police immediately after you get to a place that is safe.</li>
<li>If you have left after a violent argument, check yourself and your children for injuries, and go to the nearest hospital for care.</li>
</ul>

<p><strong>Effects on Children</strong></p>
<p>Children who grow up in the midst of violence and abuse often are deeply affected by what they witness. Protect your children, and protect yourself. Keep in mind that a partner who abuses women during pregnancy is more likely to hurt children. Seek help for your children and yourself if you are being abused.</p>

<p>Depression can be described as feeling sad, blue, unhappy, miserable, or down in the dumps. Most of us feel this way at one time or another for short periods. But true clinical depression is a mood disorder in which feelings of sadness, loss, anger, or frustration interfere with everyday life for an extended time.<span id="more-1652"></span></p>
<p>Depression can be mild, moderate, or severe. The degree of depression, which your doctor can determine, influences how you are treated.</p>

<p><strong><em>How common is depression during and after pregnancy?</em></strong></p>
<p>Depression that occurs during pregnancy or within a year after delivery is called prenatal depression. The exact number of women with depression during this time is unknown. But researchers believe that depression is one of the most common complications during and after pregnancy. Often, the depression is not recognized or treated, because some normal pregnancy changes cause similar symptoms and are happening at the same time. Tiredness, problems sleeping, stronger emotional reactions, and changes in body weight may occur during pregnancy and after pregnancy. But these symptoms may also be signs of depression.</p>

<p><strong><em>What causes depression?</em></strong></p>
<p>There may be a number of reasons why a woman gets depressed. Hormone changes or a stressful life event, such as a death in the family can cause chemical changes in the brain that lead to depression. Depression is also an illness that runs in some families. Other times, it’s not clear what causes depression.</p>
<p><span style="text-decoration: underline;">During pregnancy</span></p>
<p>These factors may increase a woman’s chance of depression:</p>
<ul>
<li>history of depression or substance abuse;</li>
<li>family history of mental illness;</li>
<li>little support from family and friends;</li>
<li> anxiety about the fetus;</li>
<li> problems with previous pregnancy or birth;</li>
<li>marital or financial problems; and</li>
<li>young age (of mother).</li>
</ul>

<p><span style="text-decoration: underline;">After pregnancy</span></p>
<p>Depression after pregnancy is called postpartum depression or prepartum depression. After pregnancy, hormonal changes in a woman’s body may trigger symptoms of depression. During pregnancy, the amount of two female hormones, estrogen and progesterone, in a woman’s body increases greatly. In the first 24 hours after childbirth, the amount of these hormones rapidly drops back down to their normal non-pregnant levels. Researchers think the fast change in hormone levels may lead to depression, just as smaller changes in hormones can affect a woman’s moods before she gets her menstrual period.</p>
<p>Occasionally, levels of thyroid hormones may also drop after giving birth. The thyroid is a small gland in the neck that helps to regulate your metabolism (how your body uses and stores energy from food). Low thyroid levels can cause symptoms of depression including depressed mood, decreased interest in things, irritability, fatigue, difficulty concentrating, sleep problems, and weight gain. A simple blood test can tell if this condition is causing a woman’s depression. If so, thyroid medicine can be prescribed by a doctor.</p>
<p>Other factors that may contribute to postpartum depression include:</p>
<ul>
<li>feeling tired after delivery, broken sleep patterns, and not enough rest often keeps a new mother from regaining her full strength for weeks;</li>
<li>feeling overwhelmed with a new, or another, baby to take care of and doubting your ability to be a good mother;</li>
<li>feeling stress from changes in work and home routines. Sometimes, women think they have to be “super mom” or perfect, which is not realistic and can add stress;</li>
<li>having feelings of loss—loss of identity of who you are, or were, before having the baby, loss of control, loss of your pre-pregnancy figure, and feeling less attractive; and</li>
<li>having less free time and less control over time. Having to stay home indoors for longer periods of time and having less time to spend with your partner and loved ones.</li>

<p><strong><em>What are warning signs of depression?</em></strong></p>
<p>Any of these symptoms during and after pregnancy that last longer than 2 weeks are signs of depression:</p>
<ul>
<li>feeling restless or irritable;<a href="http://1babyborn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/08/89796462.jpg"><img class="alignnone size-medium wp-image-1684" style="float: right; margin: 5px 10px;" title="89796462" src="http://1babyborn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/08/89796462-300x199.jpg" alt="89796462" width="300" height="199" /></a></li>
<li>feeling sad, hopeless, and overwhelmed;</li>
<li>crying a lot;</li>
<li>having no energy or motivation;</li>
<li>eating too little or too much;</li>
<li>sleeping too little or too much;</li>
<li>trouble focusing, remembering, or making decisions;</li>
<li>feeling worthless and guilty;</li>
<li>loss of interest or pleasure in activities;</li>
<li>withdrawal from friends and family; and</li>
<li>having headaches, chest pains, heart palpitations (the heart beating fast and feeling like it is skipping beats), or hyperventilation (fast and shallow breathing).</li>
</ul>
<p>After pregnancy, signs of depression may also include being afraid of hurting the baby or oneself and not having any interest in the baby.</p>

<p><strong><em>What’s the difference between “baby blues,” postpartum depression, and postpartum psychosis?</em></strong></p>
<p>The baby blues can happen in the days right after childbirth and normally go away within a few days to a week. A new mother can have sudden mood swings, sadness, crying spells, loss of appetite, sleeping problems, and feel irritable, restless, anxious, and lonely. Symptoms are not severe and treatment isn’t needed. But there are things you can do to feel better. Nap when the baby does. Ask for help from your spouse, family members, and friends. Join a support group of new moms or talk with other moms.</p>
<p>Postpartum depression can happen anytime within the first year after childbirth. A woman may have a number of symptoms such as sadness, lack of energy, trouble concentrating, anxiety, and feelings of guilt and worthlessness. The difference between postpartum depression and the baby blues is that postpartum depression often affects a woman’s well-being and keeps her from functioning well for a longer period of time. Postpartum depression needs to be treated by a doctor.</p>
<p>Counseling, support groups, and medicines are things that can help. Postpartum psychosis is rare. It occurs in 1 or 2 out of every 1,000 births and usually begins in the first 6 weeks postpartum. Women who have bipolar disorder or another psychiatric problem called schizo affective disorder have a higher risk for developing postpartum psychosis. Symptoms may include delusions, hallucinations, sleep disturbances, and obsessive thoughts about the baby. A woman may have rapid mood swings, from depression to irritability to euphoria.</p>

<p><strong><em>What should I do if I show signs of depression during or after pregnancy?</em></strong></p>
<p>Some women don’t tell anyone about their symptoms because they feel embarrassed, ashamed, or guilty about feeling depressed when they are supposed to be happy. They worry that they will be viewed as unfit parents. Prenatal depression can happen to any woman. It does not mean you are a bad or “not together” mom. You and your baby don’t have to suffer. There is help. There are different types of individual and group talk therapies that can help a woman with prenatal depression feel better and do better as a mom and as a person. Limited research suggests that many women with prenatal depression improve when treated with antidepressant medicine. Your doctor can help you learn more about these options and decide which approach is best for you and your baby. The next section contains more detailed information about available treatments. Speak to your doctor or midwife if you are having symptoms of depression while you are pregnant or after you deliver your baby. Your doctor or midwife can give you a questionnaire to test for depression and can also refer you to a mental health professional who specializes in treating depression.</p>
<p>Here are some other helpful tips:</p>
<ul>
<li>Try to get as much rest as you can. Try to nap when the baby naps.</li>
<li>Stop putting pressure on yourself to do everything. Do as much as you can and leave the rest!</li>
<li>Ask for help with household chores and nighttime feedings. Ask your husband or partner to bring the baby to you so you can breastfeed. If you can, have a friend, family member, or professional support person help you in the home for part of the day.</li>
<li>Talk to your husband, partner, family, and friends about how you are feeling.</li>
<li>Do not spend a lot of time alone. Get dressed and leave the house.</li>
<li>Run an errand or take a short walk.</li>
<li>Spend time alone with your husband or partner.</li>
<li>Talk with other mothers, so you can learn from their experiences.</li>
<li>Join a support group for women with depression. Call a local hotline or look in your telephone book for information and services.</li>
<li>Don’t make any major life changes during pregnancy. Major changes can cause unneeded stress. Sometimes big changes cannot be avoided. When that happens, try to arrange support and help in your new situation ahead of time.</li>

<p><strong><em>How is depression treated?</em></strong></p>
<p>There are two common types of treatment for depression.</p>
<ul>
<li><span style="text-decoration: underline;">Talk therapy</span><strong>: </strong>This involves talking to a therapist, psychologist, or social worker to learn to change how depression makes you think, feel, and act.</li>
<li><span style="text-decoration: underline;">Medicine:</span><strong> </strong>Your doctor can give you an antidepressant medicine to help you. These medicines can help relieve the symptoms of depression.</li>
</ul>
<p>Women who are pregnant or breastfeeding should talk with their doctors about the advantages and risks of taking antidepressant medicines. Some women are concerned that taking these medicines may harm the baby. A mother’s depression can affect her baby’s development, so getting treatment is important for both mother and baby. The risks of taking medicine have to be   weighed against the risks of depression.</p>
<p>It is a decision that women need to discuss carefully with their doctors. Women who decide to take antidepressant medicines should talk to their doctors about which antidepressant medicines are safer to take while pregnant or breastfeeding.</p>

<p><strong><em>Can untreated depression harm my baby?</em></strong></p>
<p>Depression not only hurts the mother, but also affects her family. Some researchers have found that depression during pregnancy can raise the risk of delivering an underweight baby or a premature infant. Some women with depression have difficulty caring for themselves during pregnancy. They may have trouble eating and won’t gain enough weight during the pregnancy; have trouble sleeping; may miss prenatal visits; may not follow medical instructions; have a poor diet; or may use harmful substances, like tobacco, alcohol, or illegal drugs.</p>
<p>Postpartum depression can affect a mother’s ability to parent. She may lack energy, have trouble concentrating, be irritable, and not be able to meet her child’s needs for love and affection. As a result, she may feel guilty and lose confidence in herself as a mother, which can worsen the depression. Researchers believe that postpartum depression can affect the infant by causing delays in language development, problems with emotional bonding to others, behavioral problems, lower activity levels, sleep problems, and distress. It helps if the father or another caregiver can assist in meeting the needs of the baby and other children in the family while mom is depressed. All children deserve the chance to have a healthy mom. All moms deserve the chance to enjoy their life and their children. Don’t suffer alone. If you are experiencing symptoms of depression during pregnancy or after having a baby, please tell a loved one and call you doctor or midwife right away.</p>

<p><strong>Stopping Antidepressant Use.</strong></p>

Pregnant women who discontinue antidepressant medications may significantly increase their risk of relapse during pregnancy, a new study funded by the National Institute of Health’s National Institute of Mental Health found.</p>
<p>Women in the study who stopped taking antidepressants while pregnant were five times more likely than those who continued use of these medications to experience episodes of depression during pregnancy, reported Lee Cohen, MD, of Massachusetts General Hospital and colleagues in the February 1 [2006] issue of the <em>Journal of the</em> <em>American Medical Association</em>. Depression is a disabling disorder that has been estimated to affect approximately 10 percent of pregnant women in the United States. Recently there has been concern about the use of antidepressants during pregnancy; however what has not been addressed is the risk of depression recurrence should someone discontinue antidepressant use. This study sheds light on the risk of relapse associated with discontinuing antidepressant therapy during pregnancy.</p>
<p>Contrary to the belief that hormonal changes shield pregnant women from depression, this study demonstrates that pregnancy itself is not protective. Among the pregnant women who stopped taking antidepressants, 68 percent relapsed during pregnancy compared to 26 percent who relapsed despite continuing their antidepressants. Among the women who discontinued use and relapsed, 50 percent experienced a relapse during the first trimester, and 90 percent did so by the end of the second trimester.</p>
<p>This study demonstrates the importance of weighing the risks not only of antidepressant use, but also the risk of relapse should antidepressants be discontinued. It highlights the importance of women discussing with their physicians their own individual risks verses benefits of continuing antidepressant use during pregnancy.</p>

<p>The condition of your emotions better in this trimester.  Not many complaints during this second trimester, So this period is called golden period. You begin to adjust to the hormonal changes of pregnancy. It is not a lot of physical complaints that arise. This is what makes you go through pregnancy with better and not as dramatic as previously.</p>
<p>The psychological changes that occur during this three-month period will vary from one woman to the next.  Doctors aren’t clear exactly what causes these psychological shifts, but the blame still obviously remains those pesky hormonal rises that occur throughout the pregnancy .</p>
<p>At times, you may feel as if you’re under a lot of negative stress that is tough to deal with, perhaps crying more frequently or experiencing mood swings. Some women have issues with their changing bodies, as they put on weight. Other common problems that might exacerbate your mood include the following :</p>

<li>Fears about the upcoming pain in labor</li>
<li>Worries about your ability to deliver a baby vaginally</li>
<li>Fears that the pregnancy isn’t normal or progressing properly</li>
